Steve Perry: The Voice

Steve Perry, former singer for Journey, had a musical background from the beginning. Years before his multi-platinum record sales and sold out stadiums, Perry had a love for listening to music. His father Raymond was a vocalist and co-owned a local radio station KNGS. His Mother Mary always encouraged Steve and gave him an eighth note pendant necklace for his 12th birthday, which he still wears today. Perry grew up with a love for R&B singers, especially Sam Cooke.

Steve Perry has the range of a high tenor and solid alto and is considered a countertenor. He is a rare tenor altino, a rare form of countertenor, a voice that many consider incomparable. His voice is very recognizable and longtime friend of Perry's, Jon Bon Jovi, gave him the nickname, "The Voice."

Over the years, many have noticed a deeper tone to his voice, and in 2014's appearance on stage with the Eels, his voice seemed to not be up to par. Many have speculated that his voice was gone, and that he would not be able to hit high notes. Even Neal Schon, guitarist for Journey, stated that he thinks Perry might not be able to hit the notes, and that could be the reason he does not want to return to Journey. As if Perry heard and answered, he showed up days later this past July with the band Toad the Wet Sprocket as they rehearsed in Los Angeles. Perry surprised them and started singing with the band, and it was posted on their Facebook page. Perry hit high notes and blended well with the band, proving that he can still sing the notes, also proving it to Schon.

Steve Perry will be appearing on CBS Sunday Morning on October 7, and possibly revealing the status of his long-anticipated solo album. The future looks bright for Perry fans, and these days it's always a good thing when you Don't Stop Believin' !Check out my latest Steve Perry/Journey video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2qPL_JnJUo  Subscribe today!

  1. Steve Perry is the legendary “Voice”. His voice is pretty much uncategorical he has been shoved into one vocal classification or another. But in fact it is “God Given” some would say a “genetic anomoly”as like anything else again trying to put his voice in a “proverbial box” all I know is that his voice has touched so many! He has charisma, stage presence, and above all else his voice grabs you viscerally! Once those hooks are in he has you for life he reaches in and evokes so many intense emotions . He has gotten all of us through our trials in life good and bad with his music. He puts his heart into every word that he can literally dissect into an emotion (just in one word) we have been graced by such a voice and an incredibly humble, caring human being. His return has united his fans to rain love all over him once again! A once in a lifetime comeback..his voice is amazing and yes as it stands he gives us “Raw” pure emotion. But a man of his abilities will never stop evolving. He now “warms-up” and is training the voice. Steve Perry is without a doubt the best vocalist that music lovers everywhere have been touched by.. we lost him but, we have him back!!! The future is in the making and we all will bear witness to the return of “The Voice” #DSB

  2. The VOICE as Jon Bon Jovi called him. Some have said, it is a gift from God. I do know one thing, no one has ever reached the level he has in both vocal performance and passion. He has such a uniqueness to they way he uses his voice and over all talent, that it grabs each and every part of your being. Setting aside the obvious talent of his beautiful voice, is style, grace, humbleness, intelligence, entertainment, love and a passion to grab hold and draw you in. He tells a story in each song he writes. Bringing you along for the ride. His work with Journey, set the tone for where he is today. The passion he once had, left him empty and alone. Thankfully with time and an amazing woman, he returns to us with TRACES of his life. Bringing us a timeline to where he is today. The iconic voice has returned to us, bringing the same, dare I say better, than iconic return to music and his fans. Never stop believing in what he can do. He is proving everyone, he is back to stay. DSB

  4. He has, for me, a calm hypnotic voice in some songs (Foolish Heart). Others, his voice performs...well like impossible vocal gymnastics. If the instrumental in Don't Stop Believin' is cut out, and you are able to listen closely and hear every note he sings?
    It's not-of-this-world incredible.
There is, nor ever will be another, voice with the qualities of his.
